Year 5/6 Blogpost Friday 16th April 2026

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We had a great week taking part in art day - please see the newsletter for our fantastic photos.

SCIENCE

Next week we are looking at how our body changes in our science lessons. Please could your child bring in a photo of when they were a baby/ toddler.

MUSIC

If you child can bring in a cardboard tube and clean, empty tin can for music that would be great so we have enough to make our Aztec musical instruments. We will be covering the edges of the tin in masking tape so they are not sharp.

READING

From now on, your child can also complete an Accelerated Quiz on their reading for pleasure book too. This includes ERIC books, library books and books from home - if there is a quiz on the system. This is optional and children have the choice to do this or not but their AR level books still need to be read and quizzes completed alongside this. As usual, all quizzes to be done at school and not at home. If your child passes a quiz, the words build up so please make sure you discuss any reading at home.

Please also ensure that your child is regularly:
  • Reading: Remember 15-20 minutes reading to an adult every day is the optimum and should be continuing into Year 6. Please also encourage your child to read by themselves and then discuss the text afterwards, sharing opinions, their favourite part, or questioning what happened so as to ensure that your child is understanding the text as well as reading it. All children have a Reading record to take home.
  • Spelling words - please practise these at home by revising them from your spelling and times table notebook and by writing them down. These holidays  we are up to Spelling rule Rule 58 for Daisy class and Rule 60 for Nightshade/Manuka class.
  • TTRS/Sumdog - lots of practice on these amazing programmes that complement what we learn at school. Please see your reading diaries for login details.
  • This weeks times table is: 6's and 7's 🙊

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs. Hurley, Mr. Greenfield and Miss Harvey
